Trail obstacles
Albion Freeway is clay based and can be slippery in wet conditions. Note there is one very steep section which is a short hike-a-bike section on the way up. Could be ridden on way down but take care if alone - personally I walk it to be safe.

This ride is a good alternative to using Old Blackwood Road and Nuggetty Track to access the Sweet Nuggs and Countess Loops from Blackwood.
Albion Freeway is shown in the light lemon colour in the map above.

When you come out at the Greendale - Trentham Road, head up the hill and pick up the trail off to the right at the 60 kmh sign. |

Park at the Recreation Reserve, head back up the Recreation Reserve Road and pick up fire trail on left and follow down to the ford across the Lerderderg River. This can be ridden in water depths up to about 200 mm as long as you keep firm forward progress to get over any minor rock obstacles in the river - they're typically small and can be readily seen. If deeper, it is probably best to walk this section. You then head across the Greendale - Trentham Road before dropping down into Long Gully and picking up the single track.
View looking back towards Greendale - Trentham Road, pick up single track in gully and follow to Long Gully Creek. |

Cross Long Gully Creek and follow the single track up the hill. Unless you're some sort of Amazonian hill climbing warrior / warrioress, you'll probably have to walk a short section (couple of hundred metres) on the way up. This section can probably be ridden on the way down if you've got good suspension and can handle steep, loose rock garden sections. I generally walk down here in the interest of self preservation though as I've only ridden this area solo.
Follow single track up hill - photos don't show steepness of this portion but it is steep and has a few tricky sections. |

Once you get a bit further up the hill, the single trail widens out into the lower (4WD) sections of the Albion Track. Keep following this up to the Sweet Nuggs area.

Follow the trail up the hill, you will pass a 4WD track on left and Nuggety Track coming in on the right. Keep an eye out for the Albion Mine mullock heaps on the left (refer third photo). The Sweet Nuggs trail is off to the right of the trail here. |

Explore the Albion mine diggings but be careful of holes such as in the middle photo. I think the mine has been filled and most diggings are relatively shallow but exercise care anyway. |

Just south of the diggings, there is a motor bike circuit off to the west which is good to ride. It's relatively faint next to the road side but once picked up is readily followed. Follow until you get back to the Albion Track and return. |
